Building Confident, Curious and Ready Learners

At Basics First ELC, we believe children learn best through play. Emergent play-based education focuses on the individual child, through the development of programs that are based on the children’s individual interests, challenges and understandings. Our child-led learning programs are designed to harness children’s natural curiosity. Honing in on the basics, to ensure our children have the best start.

School readiness doesn’t happen in a single program or final year of preschool. It evolves over time. From infancy through to preschool, our holistic approach and partnership with families ensures every stage of development is supported.

We’re about inspiring confident, curious learners who are ready for every new challenge that comes their way. Simply, by starting with basics.

Building Confident, Curious and Ready Learners

Curriculum

Our program is grounded in a play-based approach, where learning unfolds through exploration, curiosity, and meaningful interactions. Educators thoughtfully observe and reflect on each child’s emerging interests, needs, and ideas, both intentionally and in the moment, to create rich, engaging learning experiences for our children.

Our Educators document children’s learning through observations, work samples, imagery, transcripts, and social stories. These insights guide program planning and help our Educators build on each child’s strengths and development. In partnership with families, we use the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) to design responsive programs that reflect children’s ideas, interests, and unique learning journeys.

Curriculum

Learning Through Play

We believe that play is children’s work. It is how they make sense of the world.

They need extended periods of uninterrupted, freely chosen play, within supportive environments; guided by educators who observe, extend, and aim to create a space where curiosity can make learning limitless.

Learning Through Play

Learning in Everyday Moments

Routine times are also valuable learning opportunities.

They help children understand concepts such as time and sequence, build persistence to complete tasks, develop self-help skills, and experience a sense of belonging within their group.

Every moment of the day whether during play, group time, or daily routines is an opportunity for children to grow, connect, and learn through meaningful experiences.
